Easternwell delivers new Santos rig as part of $30 million Cooper Basin contract

Easternwell, a subsidiary of Transfield Services and one of Australia’s leading drilling and well servicing companies, has completed its latest rig build as part of its $30 million contract with Santos for the supply of heavy workover services in the Cooper Basin.

Having worked with Santos for over 20 years, Easternwell currently manages ten of its rigs in the Surat and Cooper Basin. This latest contract has secured the relationship for a further two years which could be further bolstered with the two one year extension options.

Easternwell Chief Operating Officer Darren Greer said, “In what is thought to be a first for the industry in Australia, the rig package unites the benefits of a top drive, iron roughneck, bucking unit and BOP handling system onto a heavy workover rig, whilst simultaneously retaining traits of high mobility and ease of transportation. Innovative rig design has long been a hallmark of Easternwell rigs and this is another example of how the company is improving safety for rig crews and efficiency for the client.

Easternwell Chief Operating Officer Darren Greer said, “As well as providing workover services on conventional gas wells, we will have the opportunity to potentially use this rig in upcoming shale operations. This would be a natural and exciting progression for us as we have substantial experience in the conventional and non-conventional (CSG) industry which puts us in a good position to deliver for Santos.”

The construction, delivery and management of this rig has not only cemented Easternwell’s relationship with Santos but also that of the community in which it operates.
Rig 27 was built locally at its Toowoomba workshop and approximately $4 million was spent with local and regional suppliers.

Early this week the 24-hour rig departed Toowoomba destined for the Cooper Basin. Recruitment for experienced Rig Managers, Drillers and Floorhands began in June 2013 allowing plenty of time for in-house training and development through the company’s Registered Training Organisation. This has enabled Easternwell to further expand its 1,200 strong workforce, 99 per cent of whom reside in Australia with 65 per cent from regional Queensland.

Easternwell is a subsidiary of Transfield Services, one of the leading integrated service providers to Australia’s resource and energy sectors with key operations in Toowoomba, Surat Basin, Emerald, Bowen Basin and Pilbara regions.

Transfield Services employs more than 24,000 people across 20 industries and 11 countries, providing operations, maintenance and construction services to the resources, energy, industrial, infrastructure, property and defence sectors. The Company delivers asset management services across all phases of the asset lifecycle, from concept and creation, to services that sustain, optimise and enhance asset performance.
