Grants program supports Pilbara community groups

Community groups in the Pilbara region have received more than $10,500 through the latest round of community grants from Easternwell, a subsidiary of Broadspectrum.

Much needed funds are going to a variety of groups including Jigalong Remote Community School, ABC Foundation, The Salvation Army, Hedland Women’s Refuge and From Dust Creative Arts.

Jigalong Remote Community School Principal Shane Wilson, said that Easternwell’s grant is helping purchase essential resources for the school library.

“We have been able to purchase tables and chairs as well as a range of books and educational resources for our library to provide meaningful learning experiences for our students.”

Further demonstrating Easternwell’s commitment to the Pilbara region, Alison Sentance from ABC Foundation said the funds will be used to purchase a video camera and other equipment.

“We work with local Indigenous communities in the Pilbara to deliver On-Country Activities in Aboriginal Environmental Education. In conjunction with local schools, Kids on Country Excursions brings together children from the Wakuthuni community and local Elders to learn about language, bush medicine, flora and fauna. Recording their experiences and preserving their stories will ensure they are available for future generations.”

Since the launch of the grass roots initiative in 2011, Easternwell has provided more than $81,000 to 47 groups in the Pilbara region.

Easternwell’s Executive General Manager, Tim Phelan, said the program was specifically developed to provide much needed support to local organisations that do so much in our communities.

“There are countless community groups, clubs and associations in our operating areas who provide important services to their communities.”

“Easternwell is passionate about supporting the regions where we conduct business and our grants program is one of the ways we are creating lasting benefits for community members who count on the vital support of these organisations in their day to day lives.”

Since the launch of the initiative in 2011, Easternwell has provided more than $281,000 to 176 community groups that support activities in the areas of education, health, indigenous, safety and youth.

The next round of Easternwell Community Grants opens June 2017. Eligible groups may apply for funding of up to $2,000. For more information visit www.easternwell.com.au/communitygrants
