Toowoomba community groups benefit from grants program

Community groups in the Toowoomba region have received more than $17,500 through the latest round of community grants from Easternwell, a part of the Broadspectrum Group.

Much needed funds are going to a variety of groups including ASSERT Services, Cambooya Public Hall Association, Drayton State School P & C Association, Felton Hall Association, Highfields and District Kindergarten Association, Quota International of Toowoomba, Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, Wilsonton Agriculture and Environmental Field Studies and Youth and Community Learning Centre.

Toowoomba Hospital Foundation CEO Peter Rookas said the grant will help provide Alcohol & Drug and Mental Health First Aid training.

“We will be able to educate and train up to 30 people from local schools and community
organisations to provide valuable support services to young people affected by substance abuse.”

“We will also be able to provide education for up to 20 people from local community organisations to better understand and provide assistance to those affected by mental health disorders.”

The training programs will be delivered in February 2016.

Further demonstrating Easternwell’s commitment to the Toowoomba, Joshua Waters from Youth and Community Learning Centre said that the grant will be used to purchase materials for their Cultiv8 Gardening program.

“Our Cultiv8 Gardening program provides support and education for young people aged 13-18 who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. We assist young people and their families in meeting educational needs.”

“The program primarily teaches gardening skills, numeracy and literacy skills as well as general life skills and the advantages of growing your own food and healthy eating.”

Since the launch of the grass-roots initiative in 2011, Easternwell has provided more than $74,500 to 47 groups in the Toowoomba region.

Easternwell’s Executive General Manager, Tim Phelan, said the program was specifically developed to provide much needed support to local organisations that do so much in our communities.

“There are countless community groups in the areas where we operate who provide important services to their communities.”

“Easternwell is passionate about supporting the regions where we conduct business and our grants program is one of the ways we are creating lasting benefits for communities.”
