This role is a field based opportunity. Applicants must be eligible to work permanently in Australia.

Reporting to the Driller, the position will be responsible for effectively assisting the driller and crew members with daily drilling operations of a land based rig.

Key tasks of the position are:

  • Reporting all incidents, accidents, near misses and hazards to the Driller as per the requirements of the HSE policies and procedures.
  • Liaise to the clients mud engineer concerning the management of drilling fluids.
  • Maintain & service mud pumps and carry out regular checks.
  • Maintain and repair fluid system including solids control equipment and related equipment to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Control the viscosity and weight of the drilling/kill fluid inline with written directions.
  • Utilize provided drilling fluid testing equipment to test and report fluid properties.
  • Provide accurate daily reports for pressure, fluid properties, and consumable requirements
  • Assist the Driller with the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Instruct the crew on safe handling of chemical additives.
  • Ensure the effective transfer and storage of tubulars throughout the operational process of the rig, including the application of protective chemicals and thread protection devices
  • Ensure that the derrick is inspected before raising or lowering.
  • Assist with the rigging up and down processes specifically related to rig layout and guyline placement (if applicable) with particular emphasis on the mud tank and pumps.
  • Perform SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) training as required under supervision of Driller and/or Rig Manager
  • Provide leadership and training to the Leading Floorhand ensuring that duties are performed satisfactorily
  • Comply with all company and client policy and procedures including adherence to all workplace HSE requirements

Required skills, experience and knowledge:

  • Certificate III in Drilling (Onshore Oil and Gas) or the willingness to undertake this program as part of ongoing skills development processes
  • Experience in working as Leading Floorhand on a rig
  • Strong mechanical ability with proven experience in operating plant and equipment on a workover or drilling rig
  • Interest in working outdoors in remote locations
  • Good physical condition, strength, and emotional stamina
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and formulas, lifting criteria and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations of the work environment
  • Ability to work well autonomously
  • Well developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and work cohesively with other rig crew members
  • Ability to read, analyse, and interpret equipment manuals, instructions, and procedures related to the rig and its mechanical operations
  • Developed understanding and knowledge of quality assurance, HSE, equal employment opportunity, and anti-discrimination practices as applied to the workplace
  • Current C class drivers licence
