Easternwell Group is currently seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Driller to join our award winning team. Easternwell Group provides latest technology rigs to offer contractors services to the Australian oil and gas, coal seam methane, geothermal and carbon sequestration industries.

This role is a field based opportunity. Applicants must be eligible to work permanently in Australia.

Reporting to the Rig Manager, the position will be responsible for operating all rig equipment and ensure that the rig crew performs their jobs safely and efficiently, within regulatory requirements.

Key tasks of the position are:

  • Effective operation of rig equipment to company policy and procedures.
  • Report all incidents, accidents, near misses and hazards to the rig manager as per the requirements of the HSE policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and training to the rig crew ensuring that duties are performed satisfactorily. 
  • Ensure all crew members are capable of performing their respective duties to the company policies and assist in training of crew in Standard operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  • Ensure that all employees wear the appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Conduct and supervise regular pre-tour meetings, safety meetings and perform job hazard analysis, and risk assessments with crew.
  • Complete Blow Out Prevention (BOP) drills and other emergency response drills.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained and serviced to company policy and industry regulations.
  • Provide an effective handover of all documentation and instructions on shift changes. 
  • Keep an accurate pipe tally, time log, instrument record, activity summary and provide times of operations to rig manager in the form of an IADC (daily report) or similar as directed.
  • Secure the well in accordance with company policies and procedures and initiate emergency response. 
  • Provide accurate and efficient administrative services utilising various software packages including word processing, spread sheeting, rig control software, and outlook for emailing.
  • Ensure that all documentation and reports are completed including meeting reports, confined space entry sheets, trip sheets, ton-mile sheets, well control sheets, slings and fall prevention log sheets, hazard identification reports, work permits, motor sheets, pump sheets, alert confirmations, rig consumables or any other documents required by the Rig Manager.
  • Comply with all company and client policy and procedures including adherence to all HSE requirements.
  • Check that the choke manifold valves are correctly aligned in accordance with Easternwell Well Control Standards prior to commencement of work on every shift. 

Required skills, experience and knowledge:

  • Certificate IV in Drilling (Onshore Oil and Gas) or the willingness to undertake this program as part of ongoing skills development processes. 
  • Qualification in Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management) or equivalent knowledge and experience. 
  • Experience in working as Derrickhand/Trainee Driller
  • Strong mechanical ability and with proven experience in operating plant and equipment on a rig
  • Interest in working outdoors in remote locations
  • Good physical condition, strength, and emotional stamina
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and formulas, complete well control calculations, lifting criteria and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations of the work environment
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work efficiently and think ahead to the next operation
  • Well developed communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to respond to internal and external client’s at all levels of operations including management, Rig Manager, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders of the onshore oil and gas industry
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and instruct other rig crew members
  • Ability to read, analyse, and interpret equipment manuals, instructions, and procedures related to the rig and its mechanical operations
  • Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance, HSE, equal employment opportunity, and anti-discrimination practices as applied to the oil and gas industry
  • Knowledge and understanding of rig emergency response procedures
  • Current C class drivers license (HR licence a preference).
